Have you thought about the pavements around the offices at Canary Wharf?

Pretty empty at weekends, and decent smooth concrete as it's still relatively new (plus we can't have us bankers tripping and hurting our delicate selves).

Have been twice at night (bit safer than parks) and it's pretty good, well lit loads of space and pretty much I'm the only person I see (which saves on the humiliation factor).

Elvis, humble apologies, your forum name is the same as a mate's skate name - it doesn't take much for me to crack out a few over excited exclaimation marks and a double post it would seem

now that's a brilliant idea! it's always so dead there at night, been there to go to the cinema there a couple of times and it's just dead, and all shiny and new pavements = bonus :D cheers!!

i'm looking for somewhere indoors too esp while the weather is sooooo cold... is there one on a sunday in London Bridge? Seen it mentioned but the sites for it seem a little out of date.... mind you it's not far to wander over and find out :P

Yeah there's a place just a small wander down from The Shard. It gets very busy but if you get there early it's quite empty and there's a nice bloke that does a basic lesson (falling, getting up, stopping etc).

Try Vauxhall disco on a Thursday - but arrive really early to avoid the rush of students that turn up at half 8.. otherwise we found Fridays (more expensive) were less busy less quickly if you know what I mean. It's not the best place to practice but it's a good way to get back up on your skates without the fear of tripping up on some cracked concrete or something. I'm part of the new fresh meat intake and we do sometimes go, so if we do again soon I'll give you a heads up.

Its an amazing place to practice skating backwards and great for getting agile and quick on your feet as it's more of a challenge once it's crowded.

I agree with Slice, my weaving has definitely improved due to drunken crowds at Vauxhall!

Oh and it opens at 8 - get down there before.. there'll be a queue.

Backwards?! Your faith is misplaced. Forwards currently presents enough issues to be getting on with...

Am looking forward to it though; skating with a bar? - What could possibly go wrong... :ouch:

Knee pads and wrist guards as minimum? Full Metal Jacket kit? Nuffink? Whaddya reckon?

This. If you're trained to fall on your knees, it's a really good idea to wear kneepads at all times when skating otherwise your own instinct can knacker you (and the wrist guards are good common sense too as breaking your wrist due to an innocuous-seeming fall is all too easy).
