You will always need a helmet, knee and elbow pads, and wristguards to be able to skate at our practices.
We highly encourage everyone to have their own kit for their first practice if possible, especially if you feel strongly that derby is the sport for you. If you don't end up continuing with derby, the demand for kit from new skaters is high enough that it should be quite easy to sell your kit on to someone else.
However, we do understand that some people will not have the money to be able to do this and may want to try to borrow kit for their first time out. The league does not have skates or kit to loan out for new skaters, but individual rollergirls sometimes do.
You can post in this forum requesting to borrow skates and kit for your first session, though there's no guarantee that someone will have what you need.
Skaters continuing with the rookie boot camp are to have a full set of pads and a helmet. Cycle helmets are NOT suitable. You will not be able to skate without the correct gear and there is not enough time during a practice session to share gear.
Mouthguards are not yet compulsory but if you do have one then I suggest you start wearing it as soon as possible as they can take a while to get used to. You will have to wear a mouth guard around March.
When you are looking into buying kit, you can start by reading our
What You Will Need thread.
